Cammell Laird hosts launch of fast-track apprenticeships

On the Birkenhead quayside, apprentices in hi‑viz heard it first. Visiting Cammell Laird on Friday 7 February, Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said “Britain’s future depends on getting more young people into good jobs.” National Apprenticeship Week runs from 9 to 15 February 2026. Ministers say red tape is being cut so that changes to apprenticeship standards or new short courses can be signed off in as little as three months, down from the 18‑month slog many employers complain about. (gov.uk)

They frame the shift as part of the new Growth and Skills Levy. A £725m package announced in December is set to back 50,000 more apprenticeships for young people over three years, with extra help for SMEs and mayoral pilots. (gov.uk)

The local pipeline is already there. Cammell Laird runs one of the UK maritime sector’s biggest apprenticeship programmes, working with The Engineering College and Wirral Met next door to train welders, engineers and project staff for the yards. (cammell-laird.co.uk)

APCL, the group behind Cammell Laird and A&P, says it currently has around 300 apprentices across its sites - a clear sign the North West is ready to scale as new courses come online. (apclgroup.com)

“The ongoing success of our apprenticeship programme is vital if we are to ensure that the UK retains its shipbuilding strength,” said APCL chief executive David McGinley during the Birkenhead visit. (gov.uk)

Defence employers are braced to move quickly too. BAE Systems says 5,100 apprentices are in learning and it aims to recruit about 1,100 more this year to keep pace with major programmes. (gov.uk)

Crucially for the North, the reforms will feed the new Major Investment and Infrastructure Service and the delivery of Northern Powerhouse Rail. Plans include a new line between Liverpool and Manchester via the airport and Warrington, plus upgrades across Yorkshire and better journeys to the North East announced on 14 January. (gov.uk)

There’s more detail coming fast. Foundation apprenticeships launched on 1 August 2025 in construction, engineering and other sectors, and from April 2026 employers will be able to buy levy‑funded ‘apprenticeship units’ for short, flexible training in areas such as AI and engineering. Speed will not excuse sloppiness, ministers insist. Quick revisions will be used to keep existing standards aligned with new regulations - for example, post‑Grenfell construction changes - while maintaining quality. Trade bodies welcome investment but caution that competence must not be diluted as routes are accelerated. (gov.uk)

On the ground in Birkenhead, those pathways already lead to real work: recent cohorts at Cammell Laird have had hands‑on roles on Type 26 frigates and the first new Mersey Ferry in 60 years, experience that translates into steady pay and progression. (apclgroup.com)

For Northern firms eyeing rail, energy and defence, the next step is practical: set out workforce plans in bids and feed needs into Skills England and DWP. With National Apprenticeship Week under way, get your teams in the room and shape what comes next. (gov.uk)
