Ingleborough NNR backs bare planting in Yorkshire Dales

"The net benefit of cows is trees." It is a plain-spoken verdict from the team at Ingleborough National Nature Reserve, and it captures the practical turn now shaping one of Yorkshire’s most important upland sites. According to Natural England, the reserve covers 1,186 hectares, rises to 650 metres and sits in the middle of the Three Peaks area, with ancient ash woodland, limestone pasture, limestone pavement and blanket bog all found within its boundaries. Natural England and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust manage the reserve together, balancing habitat recovery, scientific work and public access on a site that is both a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. For northern readers, this is a strong example of environmental work being led from the ground up, in a place people know and use, rather than from a desk far away.

For years, sheep grazing formed part of normal management at Ingleborough through long-running agreements with graziers. The problem, Natural England says, was that sheep pressure made it far harder for natural woodland to get started. In recent years, the reserve has moved away from sheep and towards cattle, and that change is now helping woodland return in a more natural way. The herd is a mixed-age group of Red Poll cattle, well used to woodland systems and kept at very low density, at roughly one cow for every 5 hectares. Internal gates are left open so the animals can move across large compartments, while ancient woodland on internationally important limestone pavement stays protected from access. Reserve staff said trial plots showed more young trees establishing in cattle-grazed ground than in areas with no grazing at all, because browsing is offset by the way cattle break up the soil and create places for seed to take.

Deer turned out to be another big part of the picture. Natural England says deer density on the reserve was once about 3.7 animals per square kilometre, enough to put heavy browsing pressure on young trees. A targeted cull brought that figure down to around 1.4 per square kilometre, and that has opened the door for more successful establishment, especially in species such as downy birch and rowan that deer tend to favour. European rabbits and grey squirrels are present too, but the reserve does not currently regard them as a pressing threat. That matters because it keeps time, effort and money focused on the pressures doing the real damage, rather than spreading resources too thinly.

Natural regeneration remains the preferred route where existing woodland can provide a nearby seed source. Further away from those areas, though, planting has been needed to give new woodland a start, especially on exposed upland ground where growth is slow and early setbacks matter. That work has been carried forward through Wild Ingleborough, launched in 2021 through a partnership involving Natural England, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, WWF UK, the University of Leeds, United Bank of Carbon and the Woodland Trust. Between 2021 and 2025, around 150,000 trees were planted across the project, showing both the scale of the ambition and the strength of regional cooperation behind it.

Over four years, the reserve tested several ways of protecting newly planted trees. Natural England says the mix included 1.2-metre Tubex guards, 60-centimetre spiral guards, 15-centimetre vole guards and trees planted with no protection at all. Researchers from the University of Leeds tagged some of those trees for monitoring, and the early findings cut against a lot of received wisdom. Guards did improve survival to begin with by reducing browsing, but they also made trees more vulnerable to wind snap, either at the height of the guard or after it had been removed. On high, exposed Dales ground, that longer-term weakness appears to have outweighed the early benefit.

That evidence has led to a clear change in direction. Ingleborough has now moved to bare planting only, with no tubes or guards, but at double the intended stocking density. Natural England says that approach has delivered survival rates of more than 50 per cent, better than the results previously seen from guarded trees, and more dependable than spiral guards when neighbouring sheep occasionally get in. There is also a practical public-facing reason for the switch. The Yorkshire Three Peaks walk passes through one of the planting areas, and the earlier use of guards meant extra work for staff trying to keep plastic protections looking tidy in a place with heavy footfall. Bare planting brings a gentler visual change on the ground and avoids rows of tubes cutting across a much-loved part of the Dales.

Nearly 80 per cent of the tree guards used on the reserve have now been collected by staff and volunteers and donated to other planting schemes nearby. Even that detail tells its own story. Tree protection is not only a question of what helps a sapling survive in year one; it is also about what has to be maintained, removed and reused further down the line. Taken together, the reduction in sheep pressure, targeted deer management and a willingness to drop methods that were not delivering have created better conditions for young trees to take hold at Ingleborough. It is a good northern example precisely because it is not built on flashy claims. It is careful stewardship, backed by evidence, with organisations in Yorkshire showing how practical environmental work can pay off over time.
