UK-US fusion deals put West Burton and Culham jobs in focus

'Fusion has the potential to provide virtually limitless clean energy while supporting more than 10,000 jobs across the UK by 2030,' Energy Minister Michael Shanks said as the UK and US prepared to sign fresh agreements at the Global Fusion Summit in London on Monday 14 September 2026. For the North and Midlands, the bigger point sits well away from the summit stage. If ministers want that jobs figure to mean something outside Westminster, places such as West Burton in Nottinghamshire and the industrial base tied to Culham will need to see the work, the contracts and the skills funding turn up on the ground.

According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the first of the two agreements links the UK Atomic Energy Authority with the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in a new supercomputing partnership. The aim is to bring together artificial intelligence, advanced computing and fusion science to speed up the move from lab work to commercial power. The second agreement is about rules as much as research. A joint UK-US statement on fusion regulation is meant to give investors and developers more certainty, at a point when governments are trying to persuade manufacturers, energy firms and specialist engineers that fusion is becoming an industrial opportunity rather than a distant scientific bet.

That matters in Nottinghamshire because the government's STEP programme is meant to turn the former West Burton site into the home of a prototype fusion power plant by 2040. Ministers are again presenting the scheme as a route to clean energy, skilled jobs and a new chapter for a site already tied to Britain's power story. For regional readers, this is where the diplomacy meets the day job. A project on this scale is not just about scientists and ministers; it is about fabricators, materials firms, digital specialists, training providers and transport links. If STEP grows at the pace ministers hope, supply chains across the North and Midlands will expect a fair share of the work.

Culham is also back in the frame. The government says it is putting £125 million into the AI Growth Zone there, including £45 million for the SUNRISE supercomputer, in a bid to keep the UK's fusion research base tied closely to the computing power now needed to design, test and run these systems. That link between Culham and West Burton is easy to miss in national coverage, but it matters. One site is where much of the research strength is being built up; the other is where ministers want to show fusion can move towards deployment. For firms watching from Sheffield, Leeds, Hull or Teesside, that starts to look less like abstract energy policy and more like a chain of future orders.

The wider spending push is now sizeable. The government announced more than £2.5 billion for fusion over five years in June 2025, and says that sits alongside a £180 million Lithium Breeding Tritium Innovation programme to tackle one of the hardest technical problems facing future reactors. Alongside the money, Whitehall is trying to show there is a clearer rulebook. Ministers have pointed to a published guide to the fusion regulatory system, an early engagement process from the Environment Agency and Health and Safety Executive, a draft Fusion National Policy Statement, and a dedicated market framework announced in March 2026. Put simply, the message to investors is that the UK wants to be easier to build in than its competitors.

There are smaller but still telling deals around the edges of Monday's announcement. The University of Birmingham, the Electric Power Research Institute and industry partners have secured £2.63 million for the FURESHMA fusion materials programme, while Japan's Kyoto Fusioneering says it will invest up to £3 million through Project ALBION to support materials development and testing for STEP. Neither sum changes the sector on its own, but both speak to the same point: fusion will only become a real industry if the materials, components and testing work are done here as well. That is the bit regional manufacturers will watch most closely.

Foreign Office minister Chris Elmore said the US relationship supports growth and jobs at home, and that closer work on fusion, AI and advanced computing can help British businesses reach the investment and expertise they need. The government's new UK Fusion Investment Prospectus makes the sales pitch even more plainly, setting out the country's offer to companies chasing a future global market it estimates at between £3 trillion and £12 trillion. It is an ambitious claim, and readers in places such as Nottinghamshire will measure it in a practical way. They will want to know how many apprenticeships are created, which firms make the shortlist, when infrastructure work begins and whether the promise of 10,000 jobs by 2030 reaches beyond research campuses and conference halls. That is where this story will be won or lost.
